- **Stage** — severity and complexity of periodontitis (clinical attachment loss, radiographic bone loss, tooth loss, complexity factors).
- **Grade** — rate of progression (bone-loss/age ratio; modifiers: smoking ≥10 cigarettes/day, diabetes HbA1c ≥7%).
